Taylor Bay, Gabriola Island, B.C. (1952)
Taylor Bay, Gabriola Island is a quintessential
Hughes painting which has now been reproduced as a
limited edition giclee
print on canvas. This is the first Hughes image to
be available as a limited edition canvas print. The
print edition was enthusiastically approved by E. J. Hughes.
This painting is described in Ian Thom's book
.... "The well-known Taylor Bay, Gabriola
Island, B.C. (1952), long a part of Max Stern's
private collection is, as Jacques Barbeau has noted,
a quintessential Hughes painting. It contains all
the elements of a great Hughes work: the ferry, the
island landscape, the details of the fishing boat,
the apparently unplanned foreground. The whole image
is suffused with an even, beneficent light. There is
a rightness to the image and a deep sense of
pleasure at our place within nature."

Steamer in Grenville Channel
Steamer in Grenville Channel is the second Hughes painting to be
reproduced as a limited edition giclee
print on canvas.
This painting is described in Ian Thom's book
.... "Steamer in Grenville Channel is a visionary painting that
employs light in a way that is almost baroque. The boat itself is
brilliantly lit against a brooding and dark hillside. This light has a
revelatory quality to it but the mystery, as Jacques Barbeau (a collector
of Hughes's work) has pointed out, is uncanny and defies strict
definition.
This painting occupied Hughes for months, time that Max Stern
complained about. The device of the logs in the foreground to establish
our relationship to the scene was apparently initially too loud,
detracting from the boat itself, but now is a perfect foil to the colour
of the smokestack. The canvas is closely worked and tonally unified.
Essentially, it is a black, grey and white painting with a few small
and vital touches of colour. It is also a study in contrasts: the
relatively uneven forms of nature versus the harmonious shapes of the boat
itself, and the realism of the depiction of the boat versus the clouds
that seem miraculously lit from within. The very brightness of the ship
contrasts with the gloomy surroundings.
This painting has a power that is quite beyond the conventions of the
standard marine piece."

Nanaimo Harbour
Nanaimo Harbour is the third Hughes painting to be
reproduced as a limited edition giclee
print on canvas.
This painting is described in Ian Thom's book
.... "Hughes also addressed the issue of keeping
his compositions fresh by introducing greater
complexity. Nanaimo Harbour is a wonderful painting
that reflects a visit to Nanaimo in 1948, rather than
the time it was painted, which was 1962.
It is an adept combination of observation, memory
and formal devices. The canvas succeeds in its
treatment of water, the convincing group of boats and
the accomplished way that Hughes leads the eye through
the composition into the distance."
Print details:
Image size: 26" x 37". Edition size: 200 numbered prints, 20 Artist Proofs, 2 Printer's Proofs, and 2 Publisher's Proofs.

View of Maple Bay
View of Maple Bay is reproduced as a limited edition giclee
print on canvas. The print edition was approved by E. J. Hughes.
Here is a wonderful painting of Maple Bay in the early 1970s. It is
full of detail from the driftwood in the foreground, people relaxing on
the beach and at the government dock, as well as a magnificent arbutus
tree on the left. The "STORE" sign painted on the roof of the
Maple Bay Store was large enough to attract distant boaters with
binoculars. Full of vibrant colours, Maple Bay is so recognizable as a
Hughes.
Print details:
Image size: 22" high x 17.5" wide. Edition size: 200 numbered prints,
20 Artist Proofs, 2 Printer's Proofs, and 2 Publisher's
Proofs.

Boats at a Wharf, Crofton
Boats at a Wharf, Crofton is reproduced as a limited edition giclee
print on canvas. Release date 2008
The original painting is Acrylic on Canvas painted in 1988.
"During my outdoor sketching trips on the east coast of Vancouver Island in the summer of 1986 I covered the area from near Victoria in the south to the Ladysmith area in the north. Although most of the subjects I sketched, all in pencil, were of trees, seacoast or nearby lakes and rivers, occasionally I sketched groups of boats. In this group it was mainly the maze of verticals and the foreground yellow maple that stood out."
Image size: 18" x 24". Edition size: 200 numbered prints, 20 Artist Proofs, 2 Printer's Proofs, and 2 Publisher's Proofs.
Price: (framed): numbered prints $1400.00.
